There are four pillars you need to cleanse to take the boss’ shield down. The boss is a Phalanx Taken with an immunity shield. This boss arena is very small, so use cover carefully. To cleanse the Light pillar, you need to collect five Motes of Light and hit the trigger on top of the Light pillar, and vice versa, with Motes of Dark for the Darkness pillar.
